Rendezvous at Rendezvous Bay
Shall we say around 4:00 pm? That's when the colors are at their most intense on this 1.5-kilometer powdery white beach, and the already turquoise-blue sea glows in iridescent hues.
The best time for a rum punch on the most popular beach on the Caribbean island of Anguilla. Even hurricanes Irma and Maria couldn't harm this idyllic spot in the south-east of the island. My favorite of the other 34 chillouts because Rendezvous Bay is located directly below the CuisinArt Golf Course - one of the newest and best in the Caribbean. Admittedly, nobody comes to Anguilla just to play golf. Stars and starlets such as Robert De Niro or Justin Bieber mainly enjoy the exclusivity of the hotels, cruisers appreciate the unadulterated day at the beach, but we, as always, also want to play golf. Especially as none other than golf icon Greg Norman made his debut here with a fantastic 18 holes. No easy feat, after all cricket was the number one sport on the English overseas island until 10 years ago. What the prominent designer then created on 7,063 meters between mangrove thickets, ponds and a saltwater lagoon is championship-worthy and already tops the offerings of the adjacent three 5-star hotels CuisinArt, Four Seasons and the recently opened The Reef. A former saltwater pond, whose canals lead to the sea and across the course, catches the eye. That's why each of the par 3 holes here has to do with water, and that starts on the 2nd tee. Nevertheless - the start from the elevated tee box and the sensational view of the neighboring island of St. Martin provide a pure vacation feeling. The fairways are also wide and fair, albeit with a few doglegs and sand deserts, such as on the 6th or 10th. A coral wall on the 13th hinders the approach to the green and the 17th with its peninsula green is another tough one until you quickly head for the clubhouse with a par or birdie on the 18th, a par 4 with bunkers around the green. "Liming" is then the magic word. In other words: chill out in the white and blue ambience of the club restaurant or at Garvey's Sunshine Shack - the insider tip at Rendezvous Bay.
