Golf in the festival summer
It's half-time in Salzburg's festival summer - the 98th, by the way, which runs from July 20 to August 30. Including over 200 performances: New opera productions, popular works by Mozart, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, plays and concerts through to the annual "Jedermann". For the break in between, here are a few golf must-sees around www.salzburg-info.at"_blank"">Salzburg/a>.
From the castle course to the estate course
Play a quick round on the elegant 9-hole course at the www.golfclub-klessheim.com"_blank"">Golf& Country Club Klessheim in the morning or head to Eugendorf for the 18-hole championship course in Salzburg or enjoy the gently undulating terrain of the Jack Niklaus Course at Gut Altentann. Whichever version you choose, it will be unforgettable!
Just a few minutes' drive from Salzburg city center, the GC Klessheim is surrounded by a magnificent park, the baroque palace built by Fischer von Erlach and, in between, the 9-hole course redesigned by star architect Robert Trend Jones Jr. You feel like you're in a fairy tale here - the only thing missing is the prince and princess, who have a rendezvous at the small lake with fountain. This is also one of the few water hazards, otherwise you have to deal with the old trees, which give the course an interesting touch with many doglegs. A must afterwards is a drink or a delicious, toque-quality meal on the flower-decorated terrace of the club restaurant, which also sets the Schlossplatz apart. Or a dip in the pool to cool off!
The www.golfclub-salzburg.at"_blank"">GCSalzburg Eugendorf is also ideal in the summer heat as it is just a stone's throw away from Lake Wallersee. With 18 holes, it is a real championship course and a tough nut to crack, even for experts. We enjoy driving the cart because the GPS shows exactly where the obstacles are. And there are quite a few of them: Lots of water, ravines and hills, greens defended by bunkers, in between a smart hilly terrain with wide fairways. For afterwards - be sure to go to the "Steirermadl" and eat a Backhenderl salad there. Of course, there are also heartier options - the menu is full of delicacies. The golf museum and the old English "Gentlemen's Club" are also worth a visit - perfect for a cigar afterwards. Speaking of delicacies - at www.dreieichen.at"_blank"">Landgasthof"Drei Eichen" in Eugendorf, you will have to put up with an extra kilo or two on your hips. Not only do the various starters already fill you up - the barbecue buffet and especially the desserts are so delicious that it would be criminal to go without. This is why the "Gollackners" can be proud of 150 years of family ownership with the best occupancy rates. Golfers in particular appreciate the unpretentious and cozy country house style with the best cuisine and lively bar service.
The icing on the cake could then be the www.gutaltentann.com"_blank"">Golf& Country Club Gut Altentann. As the first Jack Nicklaus course on the European continent, it is now one of the Leading Courses of Austria and has earned its place. Although challenging due to the many lakes, partly hilly terrain, hidden greens and around 70 bunkers, it offers unforgettable views of the Salzburg Lake District. Incidentally, the Gutshof not only serves good food but also music - classical music, of course. It's just as well that all these multifaceted courses are covered by one card - the www.golf-alpin.at"_blank"">GolfAlpin Card, which promises 40 golf clubs between Zugspitze and Großglockner at moderate prices.
