Mykonos

By Zeus, what an island: tiny, windswept, wonderfully crazy and insanely hip! The myth of Mykonos is alive and well, thanks to the many luxury hotels and lifestyle hotspots.

Everything revolves around Mykonos! The Cyclades lie there as if randomly painted with a brush in the turquoise Aegean Sea. Over 200 uninhabited and more than 20 inhabited islands are grouped in a ring around the luxury island. Or actually around its small, nearby neighbor Delos, once a sacred center and in ancient times the center of the Greek world. But Mykonos has long since overtaken Delos, which is still a "must" as a cultural excursion, and has become a hotspot for spoiled luxury travelers and jetsetters since the 1960s.

No wonder, as Mykonos embodies the ideal image of a Cycladic island par excellence. It is a rocky island bathed in radiant light with the lively main town of Mykonos Town (Chora) and golden sandy beaches. There are around 200 of them in total - some smaller, some larger and some located in hidden bays. Characteristic are the cubic, whitewashed houses with their blue shutters, which are stacked next to and on top of each other like building blocks in the narrow alleyways of the Chora. Then there are the brightly lit chapels and churches and the famous windmills above the town. Also typical are the unique sunsets and the strong wind, the Meltemi, which brings a welcome cooling in midsummer, but can also be annoying if it blows incessantly.

Everything revolves around Mykonos!
The island's special character also magically attracts Athens' high society. After all, Aristotle Onassis once celebrated legendary parties here. Anyone who is anyone in the Greek capital flies over in July and August. In addition, numerous clubs, restaurants and bars close in Athens and open branches on Mykonos during the summer months. The Cyclades island easily beats the capital when it comes to prices. But numerous celebrities from all over the world also populate the island in summer, where artists are just as happy to set up shop. Countless honeymooners and the international gay scene have also made Mykonos their preferred destination for years.

In addition, there are the many cruisers, who land at the new ferry port almost daily in high summer and flood Mykonos Town in particular. It's especially fun in the late afternoon when the boat tourists bump into the partygoers who have just woken up. This is when vacation worlds collide - and it is almost impossible to get through or get ahead in the narrow streets. If you are looking for more peace and quiet, it is therefore better to come in the low season. Which is not to say that there aren't also quieter corners of the island. There are numerous quieter places in the north and the beautiful, never overcrowded beach of Agios Ioannis with its pleasant cafés and beach tavernas is spared the hustle and bustle. Of course, you can also easily avoid the hustle and bustle of parties and crowded beaches in a suitable luxury retreat and simply enjoy the light, beauty and unique atmosphere of the Aegean in style.

The rich, beautiful and famous party around the clock in exclusive bars and restaurants. The famous beach clubs on the beaches of Paraga, Ornos or Psarou, such as Buddha Bar, Nammos or Scorpios, are the places to be for them. Meanwhile, the locals party to the beats of world-famous DJs on Paradise Beach or Super Paradise Beach from sunset at the latest.
From exclusive private cabanas with champagne and a private pool to bubble baths in the paddling pool, everything is possible on the party island. The island has adapted to both types of clientele, although the number of luxury hotels has increased rapidly in recent years. Upgrades are being made: simple three-star facilities are being transformed into chic boutique hotels, such as the Katikies or the Kensho.

Whether cruise tourists, Airbnb guests, luxury travelers or honeymooners, you will always meet up at some point in the bars and cafés of Little Venice with its former captain's houses built directly on the water. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets with a cocktail before heading to one of the restaurants - from gyros to sushi, from Greek to Indian - in the old town, on the harbor or on the promenade for dinner. Afterwards, you can move on to one of the bars or clubs such as Jackie O or Astra. Evening shopping in the numerous upmarket boutiques and stores is also very popular. Only very few visitors are interested in sights such as the Roman Catholic bishop's church of Panagia Rosario, the Orthodox church of Panagia Theotokos Pigadiotissa, the Maritime Museum or the neighboring Lena's House.

Practically all luxury hotels offer their guests a regular shuttle service to Mykonos Town or to the beaches. The distances on the island, which is just over 88 square kilometers in size, are mostly short. Kaikis, small boats, also take island guests from Mykonos Town to the numerous beaches in the south of the island by water. So you don't have to choose between the beach and the lively island metropolis.

And: You don't have to leave the island at all, even if a combination with the equally unique Santorini is not just for Americans, who almost always book the "combo pack".

Text: Manuela Blisse & Uwe Lehmann

The beautiful sisters Mykonos and Santorini could not be more different. One offers a party atmosphere on the most beautiful beaches, the other dream views over a unique volcanic landscape. But they do have something in common: both are home to the most spectacular luxury residences Greece has to offer.

Anreise

From Michelin-starred cuisine to souvlaki

Mykonos is not only the Greek number one for beach and nightlife, but also a real hotspot for gourmets. Mykonos Town in particular has a high density of restaurants - from simple souvlaki stalls such as Souvlike to tavernas and typical tourist restaurants to exclusive fine dining. International chefs also like to have a branch on the island

.
One of the top addresses in the Chora is M Eating by Panagiotis Menardos, who is probably one of the most creative chefs in Greece with dishes such as scallops on baked apple, orange dust and lemon fillets. Excellent Mediterranean cuisine is also served in the secluded garden of Interni - also a top address for seeing and being seen in the evening. Equally popular is Kalita with its beautiful courtyard and excellent Greek-based cuisine. At sunset, you can enjoy an aperitif in the new 180° Sunset Bar in Castle Panigirakis - here, Mykonos lies at your feet.

Scallops with orange dust

Fine dining on the beach is one of the most popular options on the island. Practically all beach clubs such as JackieO', Skopelos or Nammos have excellent restaurants.

"Simple, down-to-earth and Greek good" still works on Mykonos, however, as at Joanna's Nikos Place right on the beach of Megali Ammo (near Bill & Coo). It's practically always full here - and excellent. A classic is Kiki's Taverna on Agios Sostis Beach: the best steaks from the grill, without electricity or a telephone, only open during the day - from noon to around 7 pm - and located on a long, beautiful and wonderfully relaxed sandy beach. Sol Y Mar is one of the oldest beach restaurants and quite chic. "Luxurious but simple" is the motto. One of the most beautiful hotspots on the entire island is Spilia, which is perched on rocks above the sea. Translated from Greek, this means something like hell. However, the fresh fish and first-class seafood served here would be better described as "paradisiacal"!

Best of Beach Clubs

If you come to Mykonos in summer, you should not only reserve your bed in the hotel in advance, but also a sun lounger in the beach club  - of course in the hippest one!

DThe beach clubs are the salt in Mykonos' soup, so to speak. A glamorous stay on the Cyclades island simply wouldn't be complete without them. However, you have to differentiate between "dancing with the crowds" and "sipping champagne in your own cabana with chilled music". Both are possible - and ultimately a question of personal preference and budget.

Some clubs have long enjoyed cult status and are known to insiders and jet-setters all over the world. Such as JackieO', named after Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The nucleus of this island institution is the JackieO' Bar in

the Chora, below the church of Paraportiani, where the famous drag queen shows still take place every evening. However, the beach club on Super Paradise Beach, the adjoining top restaurant with chef Christoforos Peskias, a luxurious boutique and a trendy event organizer also operate under the label.

Nammos, a beach club with a very good restaurant also located in the bay of Psarou, has also created its own brand world. Nammos Village, probably the most exclusive shopping center on the island, is located just behind the beach. If you want to lie down on the comfortable Seora's Riviera sunbeds with mattresses by Loro Piana after (or before) your shopping spree, you can do so for a reasonable 100 euros - per day, of course. Even more expensive are the private cabanas with Jacuzzi, well-stocked minibar and butler, who will of course also be happy to help you open a 30-liter bottle of champagne.

Where the butler helps you open the 30-liter bottle of champagne ...

The uncrowned club kings of Mykonos are the two Germans Thomas Heyne and Mario Hertel, who also own the design hotel San Giorgio. After successfully running the Paradise Club (with its own VIP deck!) on Paradise Beach since 2004, their Scorpios Club on its own small peninsula in the bay of Paraga is now the hottest "place in the sun". The 6,000 m² club is laid out like an ancient agora and would certainly have pleased Greece's gods: During the day, you can relax in the hammocks on the Nomad's Terrace. At the blue hour, you can meet up with a glass of champagne on your own sunset beach. And after dinner with excellent Mediterranean and oriental cuisine, the party continues open air - to the sound of the waves and the world-class DJs who have flown in ...
