Tyax Lodge & Heliskiing: dream chalet in the Canadian wilderness
Heliskiing in Canada is a unique experience - and not just because of the unforgettable descents in the middle of an untouched white wilderness far away from civilization. For me, part of the fascination of heliskiing in Canada is also the stay in the rustic heliski lodges. In British Columbia, the motherland of heliskiing, there is a whole range of wonderful lodges. The Tyax Lodge near my "winter home" Whistler is one of the most beautiful.
The location alone is a dream. Just a short drive - or an even shorter helicopter ride - from Whistler, Tyax Lodge is located in the middle of the Canadian wilderness. The imposing log cabin sits enthroned on a hill on the shores of Tyaughton Lake. From this dream location, the helicopters take off in a north-westerly direction towards the gigantic Coast Mountains. The terrain is varied, the scenery breathtaking and the snow magnificent. Tyax has the right mix for skiers and snowboarders of all levels with gigantic glaciers, clear forest runs and challenging steep slopes. Heliskiing beginners and connoisseurs get their money's worth just as much as professionals.
And after heliskiing, the enjoyment at Tyax continues seamlessly: for après-ski, I prefer to sit in front of the huge open fireplace in the lodge, unless Finnick is already waiting for me. Finnick is an imposing Norwegian Forest Cat who lives at the lodge. For many, the black cat is the real star at Tyax, preferring to lie on a large leather sofa in the bar right next to the door to the hallway that leads to the rooms. Finnick demands to be stroked with a soft meow from everyone who passes by.
Even those who want to go to the spa have to pass Finnick and are therefore often late for their massage, which is a shame. The massages and the entire spa facilities with saunas and outdoor whirlpool are excellent. The restaurant is also top-notch and is one of the finest on the scene. No wonder, as the Tyax Lodge is a popular location for weddings and events in summer.
Of course, passionate winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world come to Tyax mainly for the heli-skiing - but the lodge alone, with its very special atmosphere, is worth every trip.
