Hideaway Deluxe
Crete with a new look
From a hotspot for culture and nature lovers to a hideaway for luxury holidaymakers: Crete is currently reinventing itself, focusing on top resorts, exclusive spas and a new interpretation of island cuisine.
Crete is booming. The largest Greek island is the Germans' declared favorite destination, as surveys last year clearly showed. Although Crete has certainly been popular in recent years, it has mainly been a destination for nature and cultural vacations or family vacations on wide beaches. The island of the gods was not necessarily the focus of luxury travelers, although there have been a number of highly sophisticated luxury hotels near Elounda on the Gulf of Mirabello for many years. And even the younger, lifestyle-oriented generation of travelers has not had Crete in its sights so far.
But this has been changing at an ever-increasing pace for some time now. A veritable wave of modernization has hit the island! This ranges from new hotels and resorts to a more varied, high-quality gastronomic offering, special experiences and a more personalized service.
There is also a trend towards ever larger residences and villas with pools in the luxury sector on Crete. And the island now also has a lot to offer in this area. For example, the Minos Beach Art Hotel www.minosbeach.com,a member of Design Hotels®, offers comfortable villas with one to three bedrooms and private pools right on the water. Guests can enjoy the same luxury when they stay in the stylish Core Residences in the Domes of Elounda, an Autograph Collection by Marriot property, in the Haute Living Residences with private pool and fantastic sea views www.domesresorts.com.Only the four ultra-luxe Elounda Domes Villas promise even more luxury and privacy. The Haute Living Selection, a "hotel-within-a-hotel concept" with numerous additional services such as private check-in, lounge access and dine around, is in particularly high demand.
Luxury for the island of the gods
The Blue Palace www.bluepalaceresort.gr,a luxury collection resort that goes one step further, also has exclusive villas with a pool. In cooperation with the German private jet provider Lohn Aviation, it offers individual and private flights from Germany, Austria or Switzerland directly to Crete. The Blue Palace also reflects the trend towards increasingly luxurious wellness on the island.
The Abaton Island Resort & Spa, which opened in 2018, is also an absolute high-class hideaway with its 152 villas and 71 rooms, all of which have their own swimming pool. Domes Noruz near Chania, on the other hand, offers beautiful accommodation with smaller plunge pools or whirlpools. It also stands for another current trend - and that is: child-free vacations in stylish adults-only hotels. There is also a strong demand for swim-up rooms, which hardly any new or renovated hotel in the upscale segment can or wants to do without. These rooms, which are usually somewhat larger and better equipped, give guests direct access to the communal pool from their terrace. This type of room can also be found at the Abaton www.abaton.gr,for example, a five-star hotel that best embodies the modern, lifestyle and cosmopolitan island style.

Another exciting development is the modernization and conversion of former three- and four-star hotels.
three- and four-star hotels into contemporary boutique or design retreats. One of the most recent examples is the Numo Beach Resort on the south coast between Ierapetra and Koutsounari. Here, a run-down middle-class hostel in a direct beach location has been transformed into an individual boutique hotel. Naturally, attention was also paid to sustainability during the conversion. And the kitchen concept in the hotel restaurant Menoa also focuses on creative, modern interpretations of Cretan dishes based on high-quality, local products.

Regional and seasonal - these two "it" words can be found on the menus of more and more hotels in Crete. They are the antithesis of the traditional grill tavernas - which of course often also prepare very good food and also score points with an authentic atmosphere, but are simply no longer as popular. Another culinary trend is the ever-increasing culinary variety. Especially in the luxury sector, resorts are expanding their gastronomic offerings and providing their guests with a wide variety of six (Abaton) or even eight restaurants (Blue Palace). Whether fish and seafood in a former fisherman's house, BBQ in the beach club, steaks at the pool grill, sushi and sashimi in an Asian-inspired ambience, Italian specialties in a cosy trattoria or international fine dining at star level - the Cretan luxury hotel industry has adapted to international standards.
