Vegan safari
Five-star cuisine in South Africa
For more and more guests, a vegan diet is part of their lifestyle; vegetarian cuisine is not enough for them. The African ecotourism organization Great Plains, which was founded in 2006 by Dereck and Beverly Joubert and now has 15 renowned safari lodges in its portfolio, now offers its guests vegan menus at the highest level.
Additional culinary training
"A year and a half ago, Beverly and I decided to switch to a completely plant-based diet and stop eating meat. We've never felt better or fitter," says Dereck Joubert. Although the chefs at the safari camps in Kenya, Botswana and Zimbabwe have always been able to cater for all dietary requirements, once the Jouberts had discovered the vegan diet for themselves, it was off to training for them. The chefs underwent additional training to learn how to prepare and present plant-based cuisine at the highest level. The Jouberts want to offer their guests the best possible and healthiest cuisine.
What exactly is on the menu varies from season to season and from lodge to lodge. In any case, guests can look forward to regional and fresh products. Even the afternoon tea, the snacks during the game drives and the sundowners are also available in a vegan option on request. The delicious fruit and vegetables, the basis for all creations, come from the fields of Africa. At the Kenyan Mara Nyika Camp, for example, chef Dominique Saningo Kota conjures up smoked eggplant and kimchi tacos with chilli lime cauliflower steaks and coconut and lime tzatziki. Followed by a double chocolate fudge cake that took the guests' hearts by storm.
Experience has shown that guests are surprised and amazed at the high quality of vegan cuisine on offer at the Great Plains Safari Camps in Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe. The sensational safari experiences and breathtaking accommodation in the most untouched areas of Africa are now joined by purely plant-based culinary delights with a clear conscience. Oryx and co. are allowed to live on and are observed in their splendor from the jeep.
