10,000-year-old natural wonder

Happy Birthday, Belize Barrier Reef! The natural wonder has turned 10,000 years old. And that is by no means the only reason to visit the wonderful little country of Belize in Central America.

10,000 years, and still beautiful:
The Belize Barrier Reef celebrated its milestone birthday on June 8, 2022, but the party is far from over. Belize is celebrating the longevity of its natural wonder by pledging to preserve it for future generations. The second largest barrier reef in the world stretches the length of the country, forming a huge lagoon along the coast and protecting it from large waves, even in extreme weather conditions. This also creates an ideal habitat for a variety of marine life: from rocky, living corals to endangered sea turtles and over 500 species of fish in every color of the rainbow. In 1996, UNESCO declared the 298-kilometer-long reef a World Heritage Site due to its exceptional value to humanity. Whether you are planning a vacation in the east or south of Belize: The wonders of the Barrier Reef can be experienced after a short boat trip - for example on an unforgettable snorkeling trip. The Great Blue Hole, which was declared one of the best diving spots in the world by French marine explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, is world-famous. But the Bacalar Chico National Park with its brilliant coral diversity is also worth a trip, as is the picturesque Half Moon Caye Natural Monument with its white sandy beaches. A brand new highlight is the spectacular new wreck diving site at Blackbird Caye, which also protects the reef.

Coral diversity

A trip to Belize is not only worthwhile because of the breathtaking underwater world.
The second smallest country in Central America also delights its visitors with a sun-drenched coastline of exotic islands, species-rich rainforests and exciting sights. The jungle is home to historic Mayan ruins and numerous nature reserves, such as the world's only jaguar reserve. There are also thousands of caves. Inside them you can find large stalactites and stalagmites as well as intact pottery, human remains and underground waterfalls. Those who prefer to explore the country's culture will come across, among other things, the Garifuna music that has made Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective world-famous. The combination of punta and paranda with guitars and Garifuna drums has almost become the trademark of Belize. And the culinary landscape is also worth a foray: lobster, fish soup, stew chicken with rice and beans, Chinese or Indian dishes are equally popular. There is accommodation to suit every taste in Belize: from small beach hotels, boutique hotels and B&Bs to luxury resorts on private islands. To get to know the interior of the country, we recommend a few nights in one of the jungle lodges in the Maya Mountains or along the Macal River. Many lodges grow up to 70 percent of the food they use themselves and offer a farm-to-table concept.
