BEE magic

The luxurious Blue Palace Resort on Crete is committed to protecting native bees

The Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort, is expanding its sustainability strategy. It has set itself the task of actively protecting biodiversity. The new PHĀEA PLAN BEE program is dedicated to the honeybee and the preservation of its natural habitat on the island. The resort is playing its part with beehives, special planting and raising awareness among guests.

Little insect really big

The fact that the world would not only be a gray place without honeybees, but that the food chain would also collapse, has been well known for many years. The small insect is one of the most important pollinators in Europe. If there is no pollination and therefore no lush vegetation, all animals are deprived of their livelihood. Although bees are so important, their numbers have been declining continuously in recent years. Among other things, the use of pesticides in agriculture is to blame. Intensive agricultural use is also leading to a decline in their natural habitats. The bee also has to contend with invasive, alien species and diseases.

In order to give the bees back some of their habitat on Crete, the Blue Palace, a Luxury Collection Resort has now made its planting particularly bee-friendly. The beehives set up provide a new home for the bees at the luxury hotel, which is idyllically situated on a gentle slope on the coast of Elounda. At the same time, the aim is to sensitize guests to the beneficial insects and their global importance. After all, it is the hotel's philosophy to preserve good things and to increase and pass on knowledge about them.
The industrious little bees show their gratitude for so much care with delicious island honey. This is harvested by hand. Interested guests can visit the hotel's own organic garden, where the beehives are located. Or enjoy the honey in the form of a honey cocktail at The Isola Beach Club and in the Arsenali Lounge bar. The traditional Cretan dessert Sfakianopita is also prepared with Blue Palace honey.
