Jamaica's Jewels
6 unforgettable experiences on the legendary Caribbean island
From powdery white sandy beaches to colorful coral reefs and mysterious grottos: if you want to explore Jamaica, you will find a whole world on a single island - full of extraordinary (natural) gems, smooth vibes and unforgettable experiences. So let's dive into Caribbean bliss and explore the island's highlights. These 6 experiences are not to be missed on your next trip to Jamaica.
1. chilling out on Seven Mile Beach in Negril
Negril, the capital of "casual", promises pure relaxation in the west of the island. Seven Mile Beach, with its picture-book white sand and palm trees swaying in the wind, is a paradise for connoisseurs of the sophisticated beach life. Here you can enjoy 7 miles of gleaming white sand, picturesque cliffs overlooking the azure waters and good food around every corner. So it's no wonder that Seven Mile Beach is rated as one of the ten best beaches in the world. Tip: stay until the evening! A vibrant nightlife with reggae rhythms and legendary beach parties awaits you here.
2. snorkeling in the colourful coral reefs of Montego Bay
If anything is fascinating, it's the underwater world of Jamaica. In total, the island has more than 450 square miles of coral reefs. The colorful reefs off Montego Bay are a particularly dazzling Eldorado for snorkelers and divers. The best spots can be reached after a short boat trip, but the underwater world can also be explored from the shore - Doctor's Cave Beach in Montego Bay is a particularly good starting point for this.
3rd ascent to the summit of the Blue Mountains for the sunrise
For adventurers, a hike to the summit of Jamaica's Blue Mountains is an absolute must. Particularly popular: the ascent in the early hours of the morning to be rewarded with an incomparable sunrise at the highest point on the island. On particularly clear days, you can even catch a glimpse of the silhouette of Cuba from up here, looking north. Good to know: You should allow around seven hours for the entire trail - preferably led by experienced guides and equipped with some provisions.
4. exploration of Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios
They are one of Jamaica's greatest treasures and are known and loved the world over: Dunn's River Falls. The breathtaking waterfalls are just a stone's throw away from Ocho Rios (one of Jamaica's fastest growing vacation centers) and are often described as a "living and growing phenomenon", constantly regenerating themselves from deposits of travertine rock. A real natural jewel!
5. river rafting on the Martha Brae River
Experience authentic Jamaica while river rafting on the Martha Brae River, near the town of Falmouth. From "Rafter's Village" you glide with experienced rafting captains on 30-foot-long bamboo rafts through a picturesque landscape, listen to the legend of "Martha Brae" and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this idyllic place. The trip takes around an hour and offers the opportunity to take in nature from a completely new perspective. Tip: Plan a walk through "Miss Martha's Herb Garden" before or after the tour to refresh your knowledge of Jamaican herbs and their medicinal properties.
6th discovery tour in the Green Grotto Caves
Sounds mystical? It is too! The Green Grotto Caves are a mysterious network of underground caves that promise an exciting journey into the "underworld" of Jamaica. In the past, the caves served a wide variety of purposes. For example, numerous pottery finds point to their early use by the Arawak Indians (Tainos). In the 17th century, they were used as a hiding place by the local Spaniards, between the two world wars they were used by arms smugglers and a little later the caves were used to store barrels of rum. Over time, the Jamaican government recognized the unlimited potential of this historic site and transferred it to the ownership and operation of the Urban Development Corporation and the St Ann Development Company. Today they are a popular natural attraction with impressive stalactites, stalagmites and an underground lake stretching over 1,525 meters.
