The drive from the airport takes you through tropical, sprawling island landscapes. Millions of years old rainforest lies like a green flokati carpet over steep limestone cliffs and narrow valleys. The Datai also sinks between meter-high trees and large-leaved plants. Here you live, as they say, in harmony with nature and experience first-hand that this luxury resort can also be about sustainability. My villa at the end of a narrow canyon juts out of the hillside on wooden stilts. Wood was also used predominantly indoors. A stream babbles softly beneath my veranda, birdsong sounds from the trees and large butterflies flutter through the sultry air. Every now and then there is a rustle in the branches and a black-furred monkey peeks out of the leaves. Just don't feed it, wishes the management.

I can only rave about the food at the resort . At Gulai House, I immerse myself in a culinary melting pot of spices and herbs. The choice is difficult. Tiger prawns with cashew nuts and curry leaf or duck curry with winter melon? The Thai restaurant "The Pavillon" is perched on 30-metre-high stilts above the canopy. The open-plan design means I can listen to the nocturnal sounds of the jungle as I dine. I enjoy haute cuisine in "The Dining Room" by the main pool. The 10-course signature menu, created by Chef Chai, formerly at the stove in 3-star restaurants, fuses European techniques with local foods. As everywhere in the Datai, nature also plays the leading role in the spa. Holistic rituals such as the seven-hour "Malay Wellness Journey" ensure deep relaxation and revitalization. Just the right therapy for swinging a golf club the next day. The greens of the 18-hole championship course "Els Club Teluk Datai" zigzag through the jungle in the immediate vicinity. There might be a few monkeys watching.
