Ra's al-Khaimah
Ra's al-Khaimah is one of the smaller and more pristine emirates, even though, like Dubai, it has just built an artificial island off the coast, Al Majan Island, on which the first resorts have already opened. But Ra's al-Khaimah, or RAK for short, is perhaps the most diverse emirate, offering beautiful beaches as well as desert and mountains and a certain local color. Just as Dubai presents itself as a world attraction par excellence and Abu Dhabi as a cultural and sports destination, RAK is trying to position itself as a relaxing, family-friendly vacation resort with beaches, nature and numerous activities. The only small mall is negligible - shopping is inexpensive and unproblematic, as everywhere in the Emirates, and can be done by cab or shuttle to nearby Dubai.
Ra's al-Kaimah scores highly as a nature and beach destination, especially for families. Major investments are currently being made in the expansion of further resort facilities.
