Upper Italian lakes
Mountains, bathing pleasures, blossoms, palm trees, old palazzi in lush gardens and the lightness of Italy. The Upper Italian lakes fascinate with their diversity, promise joie de vivre, a mild climate, a southern, laid-back lifestyle and have been and still are a magnet for painters, writers, musicians and now also for Hollywood stars. There is also no shortage of world-famous hideaways. Time-honored grand hotels, villas and palazzi such as Villa d'Este, Villa Serbelloni and Villa Feltrinelli magically attract a wealthy, international clientele. But despite the crowds of tourists in summer, you can enjoy a relaxed dolce vita in these legendary hideaways. Lake Maggiore attracts visitors with its Locarno Film Festival, which is mentioned in the same breath as Cannes and Venice (on the Swiss side), and its romantic Borromean Islands with their baroque splendor.

Celebrities and politics on Lake Como
Lake Como, also known as Lario by the locals, has always been a fashionable place. Over its entire length of 50 kilometers, Lake Como is surrounded by mountains, some of which rise steeply, which stand in charming contrast to the subtropical vegetation, and extends, like an Alpine fjord, far into the central Alpine region. Its picturesque villages have always fascinated visitors. Former German Chancellor Adenauer regularly spent his vacations in Cadenabbia, while the picturesque Belle Époque setting of Bellagio on the opposite side is world-famous. An American billionaire thought it was so "fantastic" that he had it recreated in Las Vegas - complete with mini lake.
In Como, the elegant, lively provincial capital, famous for its silk production and elegant stores, as well as in the posh town of Cernobbio with the legendary Villa d'Este and Villa Erba, where the family of director Luchino Visconti once lived, you can not only enjoy a creamy cappuccino on the piazza, but you also have plenty of opportunities to spend money. In the past, this was done by the noble families of Lombardy, to whom most of the magnificent villas on the shores of the lake are owed. In the meantime, Lake Como has developed into a hot spot for international celebrities and the VIP factor is so high that there is already talk of "Lariowood": Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Catherine Zeta-Jones - they have all been spotted here, sunbathing on George Clooney's jetty. No wonder, as the lake has been used as a movie set time and again. "Casino Royale", "Star Wars Episode II", "Ocean's Twelve" and others were filmed here.
Between Lake Como and Lake Garda lies its smaller, lesser-known brother, Lake Iseo, in the middle of which rises Monte Isola, the highest inland island in Europe at up to 600 meters. To the south of it stretches Franciacorta, a wine-growing region of the finest quality. Connoisseurs refer to it as the Champagne of Italy. Vittorio Moretti, with his Bellavista winery founded in 1977, is now one of the top winegrowers on the Italian sparkling wine scene and his L'Albereta Relais & Châteaux hotel is one of the top luxury hotels.
Sports enthusiasts and connoisseurs on Lake Garda
Deep blue water, rugged mountains in the north, lovely Mediterranean-style landscapes in the south and the mild climate are what make Lake Garda so special. In addition, a fascinating symbiosis of colors and light and the scent of lush flora. A lake for all the senses. Villas and palazzi of the former bourgeoisie (many of which have now become luxury hotels) line the shore, as do small former fishing villages and lakeside promenades that invite you to take a stroll. And it is precisely these many "faces" that make Lake Garda a real hot spot in summer. Luxury vacationers in expensive cars cavort here, as do families on camping vacations.
Of course, it is at its most beautiful and peaceful here in spring, when the flowers are in full bloom and the view from Monte Baldo can still be experienced in some privacy. The peninsula at the southern end of the lake with the historic town of Sirmione is also perhaps less crowded with tourists at this time of year. What's more, you can sometimes get a table in one of the romantic lakeside restaurants without a reservation. In general, the south-western side of the lake is particularly popular with sun worshippers due to its Mediterranean climate and the seaside resorts of Gardone del Riva and Limone with their many small bays.
The north-east is the Eldorado for sports enthusiasts, especially near Torbole, where windsurfers sometimes plow through the lake like locusts, and near Malcesine, where the cable car leads up to Monte Baldo. Paragliders prefer to plunge into the lake from this peak, and hikers get a taste of the Alps. Lake Garda is not only the "paradise around the corner" for southern Germans, Austrians and Swiss, it has also adapted to the spa and fitness trend. There are high-class wellness hotels and golf resorts, and culinary delights are served in first-class restaurants. Lake Garda cuisine shines with an exciting mix of hearty Alpine and light Mediterranean fare.
In fact, Lake Garda has everything that makes an Eldorado; for sports enthusiasts such as hikers, golfers, mountain bikers, sailors and windsurfers as well as for sun lovers and gourmets. And music and architecture lovers will find plenty to enjoy in nearby Verona.
L'Opera and L'Amore in Verona
Enjoy impressions of 2,000 years of history in bright sunshine and warm temperatures in one of the many pavement cafés in Piazza delle Erbe. Surrounded by the sensual hustle and bustle of wildly gesticulating market traders, haggling tourists and strolling, embracing couples who do the city of love all credit. This is just one of the many charming aspects of Verona, which nestles picturesquely in the bend of the Adige.
Music lovers from all over the world travel here every year for the world-famous opera festival in the Arena. After Venice, Verona is the most important art and cultural metropolis in the Veneto region and its old town is home to enchanting buildings from the Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance eras. Just a few meters from the lively Piazza delle Erbe is the tourist magnet par excellence: the Casa di Giulietta with probably the most famous balcony in world literature, where the love tragedy immortalized by Shakespeare is said to have taken place. It is now also possible to get married here.
Verona has the flair of a charming, somewhat morbid, typically Italian city: enchanting squares with marble-decorated, slightly crumbling palazzi, winding alleyways with elegant shopping opportunities, colorful markets, small romantic osterias and a wealth of cultural treasures and events.
Lago Maggiore, Lago di Garda and Lago di Como are terms that have been melting in the mouth like Italian gelato for decades. And even today, the northern Italian lakes are among the top tourist destinations for connoisseurs and celebrities.
