There are places of longing that become disenchanted when traveling. In Los Angeles, this realization could spread among those hopeful film fans who make a daily pilgrimage from all parts of the world to the Hollywood district and find a deplorable fairground around the legendary Chinese Theatre. To get as close as possible to their movie idols, many of them book bus tours that take them to the supposed homes of the stars. Those who board such buses are just as far removed from the true essence of this often underestimated city as they are at home in front of the screen. Fortunately, these voyeurs rarely see more than dense hedges and the gate to the driveway.

The fascination of L.A. is undoubtedly revealed to visitors in other places: for example, on the wide, long sandy beach of Santa Monica, where surfers are said to have invented skateboarding and where walkers can sometimes watch seals fishing close to the shore. Or just a few kilometers away in Topanga State Park, where cougars still live to this day and rustic hiking trails make the metropolis of millions disappear for a moment. Or the tar pits in the La Brea district, where tarmac pushing its way to the surface spits out the skeletons of long-extinct animals.
Unlike almost any other metropolis, Los Angeles forms a universe in which sports enthusiasts, nature lovers and art lovers are equally at home. How many Europeans know that L.A. has an extremely valuable art-historical heritage? Visits to the Getty Center or the Getty Villa alone would be good reasons to make the long journey, but they are only the tip of the spear of a rich museum landscape. In summer, the concerts at the Hollywood Bowl are a must-see, not least because of the unique atmosphere, and for the rest of the year, star tenor Plácido Domingo puts together the L.A. Opera's program at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Right next door, the Walt Disney Music Hall (noun is not an omen here!) offers perfect acoustics for first-class classical concerts.

In the spotlight: Unique architectural treasures
Los Angeles is above all an architectural metropolis. From the Arts and Crafts Movement (Gamble House in Pasadena) to the Mission Style of the 1920s (Adamson House in Malibu) and Art Deco (downtown Santa Monica) to Mid-Century Modern architecture (detour to Palm Springs), whose idea of merging interior and exterior space is still preserved today (Getty Center), the greater Los Angeles area offers outstanding witnesses from historical eras. Another downer is the culinary situation: while the Californian food capital of San Francisco places great value on the freshness of local ingredients, Angelenos rejoice especially when the import ban on Japanese cattle is lifted. As a rule, food in Los Angeles is neither an intellectual nor a particularly original story. There are exceptions, of course, such as the restaurant "Ink".

A city with many faces
Smart travel planning is even more advisable in Los Angeles than in other places, as the distances tend to be long. Numerous independent communities form islands in the middle of the city, including Santa Monica, Malibu, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Pasadena. They are recognizable to outsiders mainly by the different design of the street signs. Visitors therefore need a car. Although efforts have been made for many years to improve the public transport network - for example with the construction of new subway lines - a rental car still saves long waiting times and walking distances. Anyone who thinks that cars are comparatively inexpensive in the car city of L.A. is mistaken. When visiting restaurants or hotels, you usually pay for valet parking - a type of assisted parking.
In addition to the parking fees, a number of other charges increase the original hotel room price, such as taxes, internet and breakfast. Every morning, meals are exclusively à la carte, and what is on the menu is sometimes irrevocable. "A mixed basket of bread and toast? Sorry, sir, that's not possible. But you are welcome to order a bread basket AND a toast basket ..."
However, for those who manage to take such airs and graces with humor and seek out the right addresses during their stay, L.A. has exciting discoveries in store. For such visitors, Los Angeles quickly becomes a place of longing over the course of their trip.
