Kiev

Kiev is the capital and economic center of Ukraine. It lies on the banks of the Dnieper and has an eventful history behind it, which is also reflected in the city's architecture. Religious buildings, traces of the Soviet past and modern complexes offer visitors a varied picture.

The most important sights include the Cave Monastery, St. Sophia Cathedral and St. Andrew's Lane - also known as the Montmartre of Kiev - where you can marvel at St. Andrew's Church or the castle of Richard the Lionheart. Independence Square, Maidan, is also of great importance. Surrounded by historical buildings, it is a lively center and became famous in 2004 due to the "Orange Revolution" and most recently due to the Euromaidan. The different historical influences are also noticeable in the cuisine, which is generally rather hearty with old Slavic traits.
