The Indo-Chinese peninsula of Cambodia borders Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. The capital is Phnom Penh, the cultural and economic center of the kingdom, which offers visitors numerous sights as well as an exciting nightlife. Despite the difficult political situation, Cambodia is a rewarding travel destination and inspires with its wild flora and fauna, for example on jungle expeditions, a river cruise on the Mekong or discovering the numerous offshore islands along the coast. Impressive Buddhist temples, Khmer Rouge influences, the large market in Phnom Penh, which was renovated in 2009, as well as modern buildings are architectural highlights of the country. Cambodian cuisine is mainly based on that of Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, but is often more restrained in terms of spiciness and exoticism.
