Antigua - pure Caribbean flair away from the tourist hotspots. The dream island was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, who named it after the patron saint Santa Maria de la Antigua. You can still visit the English fortifications today, such as Shirley Heights in the south with a view of English Harbour. The north-western harbor in the capital St. John's is a popular starting point for Caribbean cruises. At the heart of the island, however, are the numerous bays and white sandy beaches - there are said to be 365 of them, one for every day.
