From Stone Age megalithic temples to the magnificent palaces of the Knights of St. John: Malta is a cultural hotspot in the heart of the Mediterranean - and a must for travelers with a spirit of discovery.

The smallest EU country has truly great things to offer when it comes to culture: The island trio of Malta, Gozo and Comino entices visitors with more cultural monuments per square kilometer than any other country. In less than three hours by plane, you can embark on an unforgettable journey through time. The capital Valletta with its world-famous monuments - such as the Grand Master's Palace or St. John's Co-Cathedral - is a lively open-air museum. On a stroll through the winding alleyways, you can follow in the footsteps of the Knights of St. John, whose Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette laid the foundation stone for the city in 1566.

In 1980, Valletta was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and in 2018 it was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture. The megalithic temples of the archipelago are definitely worth a visit. The abundance of archaeological temples is astonishing. The Ggantija Temple on Gozo is one of the most important freestanding monuments in the world - older than Stonehenge and the pyramids in Egypt. The Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni is a hands-on experience of the Stone Age: a road worker discovered the underground structure in 1902, which reaches 15 meters down over three floors and was probably used as a burial site. Fancy another trip to the Middle Ages? In Malta's former capital Mdina, time seems to stand still. Located in the west of the island, the almost car-free "Silent City" fascinates with its mixture of medieval and baroque architecture.
