The Bayerischer Hof has a new lobby, designed by Axel Vervoordt: an atmospheric space that captures the essence of the hotel.
As you step through the door from Munich’s Old Town, you immediately feel at home: The new lobby of the Bayerischer Hof welcomes guests not with opulence, but with proportions reminiscent of sacred architecture. The natural stone beneath your feet is a warm red—more precisely, “Hungarian Red” from Hungary’s last active quarry—the very stone once used in feudal palaces. Above, a coffered ceiling arches overhead, giving the space the feel of an inner courtyard. Antique columns from Italy stand in the room, flanked by walls of classic clay plaster, applied using traditional craftsmanship methods. European walnut and naturally tanned leather were used for the reception area. For interior designer and art collector Axel Vervoordt, this hall was a vision from the very beginning. Together with Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki, he developed proportions that do not represent or show off, but rather connect. For this space is the center of a world: From here, paths lead to the Palais Montgelas, to
falk’s Bar , to the two-Michelin-starred restaurant
Atelier , to
Trader Vic’s , and to the
Cinema Lounge . Four million euros have been invested in the tenth project that Vervoordt has realized for Innegrit Volkhardt. It underscores what the Bayerischer Hof is: a place with character. With 337 rooms, including 74 suites, five restaurants, six bars, and the Blue Spa on the rooftop terrace, the hotel on Promenadeplatz remains a world unto itself—timeless and authentic.
