Alpzitt Chalet & Holzbau Maier

Where wood breathes history

At the foot of the Grünten in the Allgäu region, Holzbau Maier has created luxurious chalets for the Gilb family—not merely places to stay, but spaces designed to help you slow down.
As soon as you step inside the chalets, you feel it immediately: the tranquility that radiates from the walls. Chopped reclaimed wood, sun-bleached and weathered by the wind, characterizes the facades and interiors. Over three thousand square meters of it were used—each piece is one-of-a-kind; no two surfaces are alike. The wood comes from old barns and alpine huts, bears the patina of decades, and lends the rooms an authenticity that cannot be staged. The chalets are built using traditional timber-frame construction with a double roof, robust and timeless at the same time. Inside, the material language continues: beds made of solid Swiss stone pine, joined by dovetail joints. The bathroom furniture in a volcanic oak finish creates a dark contrast, while the kitchens in a cement finish offer a modern one.

The wellness area, too, is permeated by the logic of authenticity: black flat steel elements set clear accents without dominating the wood. Outside, by the natural swimming lake, movable reclaimed wood slats and a curved larch wood terrace frame the water. You sit, gaze at the Grünten, and forget that there is a world beyond this silence. The Gilb family has found a partner in Holzbau Maier from Bramberg who understands that building is more than just construction. From the first cozy chalets to the premium chalets by the lake, which opened in the fall of 2025, this philosophy is consistently applied: Nothing should be loud; nothing should feel artificial. The Alpzitt Chalets are a retreat, not an escape. A place where arriving means being at peace with oneself.
