Vacation on Crete

Hours of sunshine and adventure

The legendary island of Crete is not only considered to be the cradle of Europe, but the Greek destination of longing is also known as a paradise for sun-seekers and bathing beauties. Anyone looking for the perfect balance between relaxation and adventure will find it on Crete. Between fine sandy beaches and pebble coves, there are countless opportunities to enjoy beach life and explore the underwater world of the Aegean.

The village of Palekastro and its surrounding coastline in the east of the island is a hotspot for windsurfers and kitesurfers. The wind conditions there attract water sports fans from all over Europe. The meeting point of the scene is Kouremenos Beach, which is located around two kilometers from the village center. A wide range of water sports - from water skiing to windsurfing - can be found in the north of Crete. Ammoundara Beach is one of the most diverse and therefore busiest beaches on the island. The numerous activities, bars and tavernas on offer make it particularly popular with families and young people. Due to the spaciousness of the beach, there is still enough room for everyone.

The depths of the Mediterranean are best discovered in Almyrida in the Chania region. Volcanic rocky reefs, dark corals and the diversity of species make Chania one of the most popular diving areas in Crete. The underwater world of the largest Greek island is home to unique marine life that cannot be found anywhere else. With a bit of luck, you might even spot the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles. Countless snorkelling and diving excursions are organized from Chania, and some of the tours are also offered as full-day sailing trips.

Not far from the city of Chania is the picturesque coastal village of Agia Marina, with its beautiful sandy beach and crystal-clear waters. The western part of the beach is particularly suitable for a dip in the cool water. The artificial bays located there invite you to spend a relaxing day by the sea.

For a little workout in between, a trip on a Stand UP Paddle Board (SUP) is ideal. The shallow waters of Crete's sheltered bays allow you to explore the Mediterranean coastline at your leisure. About an hour's drive away - between the mainland and the wild Cape Tigani peninsula - is one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete, Balos Beach. The white, partly pink-colored sand and the natural surroundings make the place a highlight that should not be missed on any tour of Crete.

Even if the sun, beach and sea invite you to linger, Greece's largest island also enchants with its wild and romantic mountain world. Numerous peaks, a pleasant climate and deserted paths make Crete a popular vacation destination for hikers. There are gorges, forests, plateaus and several caves to explore in the mountain ranges, while demanding outdoor fans can go on an excursion to the Ida Mountains. The ideal combination of a vacation by the sea and an adventure in the mountains is offered above all in western Crete.

The best time to visit Crete is in late spring and fall. Temperatures usually remain stable and warm until October, ideal for those longing for a few extra days of summer.
