Toronto
Star kitchens and luxury accommodation
Toronto is a popular travel destination for many reasons. Canada's largest metropolis offers numerous attractions, a breathtaking skyline on Lake Ontario and a multicultural cuisine that offers a successful mix of street food and fine dining.
Michelin Star Reveal Event
The renowned hotel and restaurant guide Michelin, which recently paid its first visit to the city of millions, agrees. Although the first talks took place in 2017, the chefs had to wait until September 2022 for the Michelin Star Reveal Event to become a reality. The pandemic was to blame, but it was worth the wait. Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of Michelin, had 13 stars in his luggage at the first attempt, which were awarded to 12 establishments. The Japanese restaurant Sushi Masaki Saito was therefore the only one to be awarded two stars and is not just worth a visit, but a detour.
13 stars for Toronto's restaurants
The authentic cuisine from the Far East seems to have tasted particularly good to the Michelin Incognito testers, as four more Japanese restaurants have made it into the guide.
Delicacies of contemporary cuisine can be found at Frilu and Enigma Yorkville. Seasonal seafood is served at Osteria Giulia and Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto, with the latter also offering contemporary dishes. Mexican textures and flavors can be explored at Quetzal, while Mediterranean-inspired dishes are on the menu at Edulis.
Furthermore, 17 restaurants were awarded the Bib Gourmand, a Sommelier, Service and Exeptional Cocktail Award and 44 other restaurants were named as worthwhile. While three cities in Florida have to join forces to achieve this total, the many awards underline what Toronto has long been capable of as a culinary destination.
Street food and gastronomic experiences
Even those that didn't make it into the popular guide the first time around are regularly frequented by locals and foodies from out of town. The large number of immigrants in particular ensures that specialties from all over the world can be found on every corner. Whether hoppers from Sri Lanka, Armenian jingalov hats or Palestinian desserts, if anyone can boast a myriad of flavors, it's this vibrant city.
The gastronomic experience is not neglected here either. Chef Patrick Kriss, who has also won a star with his modern French restaurant Alo and the Alobar, is the founder of the Alo Group. This includes the "Salon", an intimate space where guests can indulge in a five-course dinner in private. The idea was born shortly after the pandemic, when Torontians were not only hungry for fine dining, but also for privacy. Initially, the service and kitchen team came to people's homes, but this later evolved into the exclusive dining room in the trendy Yorkville district.
Ritz-Carlton
At the 5-star luxury hotel Ritz-Carlton, you can even borrow the Executive Chef of the in-house restaurant Toca to stroll through one of the world's best markets with him. During an afternoon together, Paul Shewchuk explains how his passion for cooking came about and how he gets his inspiration from the St. Lawrence Market. Together they will select fresh ingredients that will later be incorporated into a first-class menu. But first there will be a live demonstration in the Toca kitchen, where participants can practise cutting agnolotti. The tasty calories can be worked off later in the evening in the hotel's indoor saltwater pool or you can take a walk to the nearby CN Tower. In terms of location, the high-end hotel chain in Downtown is hard to beat.
Fairmont Royal York
The metropolis offers plenty of accommodation for discerning travelers. Once the tallest building in Toronto, an entire floor of the Fairmont Royal York is reserved for royalty when the British royal family visits. Hotel guests also feel like royalty, as they can experience the many amenities of a luxury boutique hotel on the Fairmont Gold floor: A sumptuous breakfast, hors d'oeuvres in the afternoon and a breathtaking view of the lake make the stay an unforgettable experience.
Shangri-La Hotel
Another inviting residence that sweetens the travel season is the Shangri-La Hotel, which has its origins in Asia. In Canada, the luxury hotel is only available in Vancouver and downtown Toronto. This elegant accommodation offers exquisite rooms, breathtaking suites with high-quality interiors and an extensive gastronomic offering with a focus on Asian dishes. The infamous lobby is particularly cozy with its black marble fireplace framed by an ever-changing display of couture gowns. The atmosphere is made even cozier by entertaining live music on the piano.
Four Seasons Hotel
Pure luxury is what the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto is known for. From the unique service to the opulent furnishings, this five-star paradise is the perfect retreat for luxury travelers. Located in the heart of the trendy Yorkville district, guests will find themselves in a modern yet glamorous environment. For relaxation, the Four Seasons offers more than a dozen treatment rooms in the extensive spa area. Artists and designers showcase around 1,700 Canadian exhibits and those craving a French breakfast can start their day with traditional flavors at the Brasserie Café Boulud.
With so much choice, nothing stands in the way of a relaxing and luxurious weekend in Toronto. All you have to do is decide where you want to be pampered at the highest level.
