Swimming marathon on St. Croix

On November 12, 2023, the time has come again:

On this day, swimmers from many countries come together to participate in the Coral Reef Swim between Buck Island and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands) . There are three distances to choose from in this friendly competition for different age and ability groups: one, two and five miles. The event was created 27 years ago by Elizabeth Armstrong, owner of Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort, and swimmer Kim Sanford to raise awareness of the endangered reefs in the Caribbean. Participants in the swim will learn about the beauty and uniqueness of the pristine waters of Buck Island, a living coral reef that has been designated an underwater park by the U.S. National Park Service. Coral reefs are fragile natural resources that generate billions for the Caribbean through fishing, diving tourism and coastal protection services. A groundbreaking study led by The Nature Conservancy found that reef tourism in the Caribbean generates $8 billion annually with over 11 million visitors. The Coral Reef Swim attracts both amateur swimmers and world-class athletes. This year's participants range in age from 11 years to 75 years. The finish line is the palm-fringed beach at Buccaneer Beach & Golf Resort, where a steel band awaits the swimmers.
