Swimming with sharks
Cat Island, Bahamas
Some divers feel a special thrill when they encounter sharks in the depths of the sea. Several species can be found off Cat Island, the island where Sidney Poitier was born: bull sharks, nurse sharks, tiger sharks and whitetip weasel sharks (longimani). April to June is the best time to observe them in their habitat. Until the 1960s, there were very many whitetip weasel sharks on earth. Since then, however, their numbers have been decimated, as their fins are highly prized, especially in Asian cuisine. Cat Island is the best spot in the world. Divers dare to approach these rather aggressive sea creatures during expeditions, even without a cage. They don't have to dive too deep, as the longimani prefer to stay just below the surface. The conditions around Cat Island are perfect: the calm, crystal-clear sea is a wonderful place to go on a photo safari.
