Rum renaissance on St. Kitts

One of the oldest settlements in the New World

As the site of the first English land grant in the Caribbean, Old Road Town on St. Kitts is
is one of the oldest settlements in the New World. Rum was produced here for more than two centuries. Entrepreneur Jack Widdowson revived this tradition at Wingfield Estates, founded in 1625. He revived a former rum distillery dating back to 1681, which some believe to be the oldest surviving distillery in the Caribbean. Thanks to a revitalization programme, it is now a museum. Widdowson produces Old Road Rum, which redefines the island's spirits culture.

The rum gets its full flavor from being matured for 12 years in bourbon barrels. The entrepreneur has also launched a "Founder's Program" that offers enthusiasts the chance to own one of the first 500 bottles produced here and become a lifetime member of the Old Road Rum Company. The experts at Old Road Rum also run rum master classes here, where they learn about the history and flavors of different rums.
