A kingdom for a seahorse

Sweetings Pond on Eleuthera

The Bahamian nature island of Eleuthera has gained a new nature park: Sweetings Pond, a nearly 2 kilometer long saltwater pond. The lagoon is invisibly connected to the sea and is home to the world's densest collection of seahorses. After decades of effort, the Seahorses National Park was created here on an area of 2.2 km2, which also includes the floodplain landscape around the lagoon. The park is also connected to the Hatchet Bay Caves, the longest system of dry caves in the Bahamas. The 33rd national park on the island archipelago is also an important habitat for giant crabs, octopus and conch. Visitors can observe the only creature in the world where males become pregnant and live mainly monogamously.
