Blue holes

Bahamas and Belize

On a flight over the 700 islands of the Bahamas archipelago, travelers can see endless expanses of blue - from light blue to sky blue to night blue, from turquoise to aquamarine and indigo. It was only at the end of the 2nd millennium that explorers discovered the "blue holes", the karst funnels in the ocean that also contain many caves. There are 150 of them in the Bahamas. At 202 vertical meters, "Dean's Hole" off Long Island is the second deepest in the world. Underwater fans get their money's worth here at the "Vertical Blue" diving competition, which takes place every August. You will encounter many sea creatures - corals, fish, turtles and birds. The Blue Hole National Park, consisting of 60 funnels, was opened off the island of Andros in 2002. The nature reserve extends over 16,000 hectares. In addition to the sea funnels, there are also land funnels where you have to be careful when swimming due to the bisulphite content on the water surface. However, these blue land funnels represent a rich field of research for biologists. Belize also has a diver's paradise in the sea. The Great Blue Hole, the largest of its kind in the world, is 70 kilometers from Belize City. Here, ocean fans can immerse themselves in true underwater architecture and spot 2.8-metre-long stalactites. The Great Blue Hole is one of the 10 best diving spots in the world.
