Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort, Roseau, Dominica

The history of the Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort dates back to 1699, when the building still served as a military fortress. The building has now been restored at a cost of US $18 million. Historical details have been perfectly integrated into the design. The 60 new rooms now offer exquisite comfort and views of Dominica's capital Roseau, the mountains and the sea. The team of architects from ARGO also incorporated Creole design elements into the existing 40 Ocean Front rooms and suites, such as colorful geometric woodwork, palisade walls and wallpaper depicting Fort Young during the French occupation in 1778. The visual palette throughout the resort includes dark tones and nature-inspired elements that harmonize with the rustic ambiance of the old fort.

The Fort Young Hotel's diving operations have also evolved. The resort has two new boats with space for 56 divers and 75 non-divers respectively. Dominica is not only one of the best diving destinations in the Caribbean, but also attracts visitors who love to watch sperm whales. They can be seen year in, year out in the island's waters. Guests can also glide down into the depths of the sea from the jetty and experience the marine fauna on the house reefs - corals, octopus and frogfish, seahorses, etc. The underwater landscape also has some "sights" to offer: cannons from a Spanish galley, a 100-year-old sunken luxury yacht and rum barrels that are stored in the sea for maturing.
