CASTEL MAURN
2nd place: Modern design in a historic setting: The restored, historic Castel Maurn offers guests eight distinct hotel suites.
The estate, with its towers, bay windows, and gables, was first mentioned in 990. In 2021, Walter Peintner carefully renovated the historic, listed property, creating a hybrid of residence and hotel—featuring eight suites of varying sizes, each with its own unique character. High-quality materials such as wood and natural stone, natural fabrics, soft carpets, and thoughtful details characterize the cozy living spaces. Each suite bears the name of an artist or scholar whose work was uncovered during the restoration of the beautiful frescoes.
A Mix of Stories
The Radetzky Suite, for example, features a parlor with original wood paneling; the tables and lamps are design pieces from Italian manufacturers. The fixtures in the bathrooms shine against elegant fabric wallpaper, while ceramic tiles line the walk-in showers. State-of-the-art technology is hidden behind the walls. Underfloor heating warms the entire house.
Wellness in a refined setting
The former utility rooms now serve as a modern spa. Here you’ll find a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, a relaxation room, and a cold plunge pool. Fluffy bath towels are stored in a historic cabinet, and spring water bubbles from a stone trough. There is also a fitness room with natural light and fresh air. A highlight is the heated outdoor pool, open year-round, nestled in the heart of the fairytale castle garden.
Guests are treated to a breakfast featuring exquisite regional products, delivered to their room door each morning. For those who prefer not to cook in their suite’s high-quality mini-kitchen, Walter Peintner and his partner Sabine Sorio are happy to assist with restaurant recommendations. On special occasions, a chef can also cook for everyone in the large communal kitchen, and guests can then dine individually or together at a long table in true style.
