THE FONTENAY Hamburg

In the early 19th century, American merchant John Fontenay came to Hamburg to set up shop as a shipbroker—and fell in love with a unique plot of land in the heart of the city, right on the shores of the Alster. Today, THE FONTENAY Hamburg, a 5-star superior hotel and member of The Leading Hotels of the World, stands at Fontenay 10.

Green Design:

Hamburg-based architect Jan Störmer drew inspiration from the surrounding landscape for the building’s amorphous shape. The three interlocking circles evoke the canopies of large trees; there is no “back”—rather, THE FONTENAY Hamburg is surrounded by greenery on all sides. At its heart are a landscaped courtyard and the 27-meter-high atrium. Within the 130 rooms and suites—each boasting semicircular walls, floor-to-ceiling windows, and 2.85-meter-high ceilings—carefully curated designer furniture, elegant hardwood floors, and warm, inviting colors coalesce to create an intimate atmosphere. Decorative objects from the Danish industrial design brand Georg Jensen and original works by the Peruvian painter Antonio Máro further enrich the harmonious whole.

pièce de résistance of this luxury establishment is the rooftop area on the sixth and seventh floors. Here, guests discover the two-Michelin-starred Lakeside, which serves cosmopolitan cuisine with French roots, and the Fontenay Bar, where imaginative cocktails are complemented by live music. On the ground floor, the Parkview garden restaurant captivates with its casual yet refined ambience and summer terrace, offering a prime view of the Alster. In the Atrium Lounge, delectable afternoon tea creations from the pâtisserie are served. Brand new, Osteria due serves Italian cuisine that evokes cherished memories while presenting creations that delight and surprise.
