Winter in South Tyrol: these are our hotel tips

Beautiful all year round without exception

They are not the highest mountains in the world, but they are the most beautiful," says South Tyrolean mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner about the Dolomites. Bizarre peaks, racy steep slopes and gentle alpine meadows - South Tyrol is a paradise for skiers, ski tourers, cross-country skiers and winter hikers. And this is not only due to the scenic beauty of the mountains south of the Brenner Pass, but also to the unique mountain hut culture. Homemade pasta, hearty dumplings and South Tyrolean wine - nowhere else is better to eat in the mountains than in South Tyrol. In more than two dozen ski resorts, many of which have joined together to form the Dolomiti Superski association, sports enthusiasts also get their money's worth. Ski World Cup races are regularly held in Alta Badia, Val Gardena/Gröden and Plan de Corones/Kronplatz. The cross-country skiing World Cup is held in Dobbiaco every year, and the biathlon medals will be awarded in Antholz at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Many hotels have spruced themselves up for the Olympics.

Alphotel Tyrol and Mons Silva Chalets

By the time the Ratschings-Jaufen ski area with its snow-sure northern slopes opens for the winter season at the latest, the Alphotel Tyrol will have completed its ambitious expansion. This year, the traditional hotel will be transformed into a five-star hotel with a modern Alpine design. Rooms will be enlarged into suites, four new penthouse suites with their own saunas and whirlpools will be added, the restaurant will be redesigned, the spa will be expanded and an additional infinity edge pool will be created on the roof. With the upgrade, the Eisendle family is bringing their family-friendly hotel up to the level of the recently created Mons Silva Chalets. The luxurious wooden vacation homes for 2 to 9 people with fireplaces, saunas and hot tubs offer plenty of privacy, breakfast service in the chalet and all hotel services.

Olm

The UFO has landed - in the middle of the Tauferer Valley. Reminiscent of a circular spaceship, the Eco Aparthotel is one of the most interesting newcomers in South Tyrol. And not just because of its unusual shape. The building is completely self-sufficient: the solar power comes from the roof, the heat from deep within the earth. Just like the artesian mineral water for the pool and the natural pond in front of the spa and the drinking water supply. The minimalist design of the sustainable hotel with its clear lines, lots of glass and light-colored wood exudes a wonderful sense of calm that is reminiscent of Japanese architecture. In the Prenn restaurant, host Berni Aichner provides variety with themed dinners ranging from tapas and South Tyrolean delicacies to gourmet menus. You can also cook for yourself in the apartments. Some of them offer free-standing bathtubs and private saunas. Even though the Olm is a house to stay in, in winter the slopes of Skiworld Ahrntal and the nearby Kronplatz as well as countless cross-country ski trails, winter hiking trails and toboggan runs beckon. www.olm.it
