Raffles London at the OWO
From war ministry to luxury hotel
Where famous politicians and secret agents, such as Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming, once came and went, the latest branch of the renowned Raffles brand is currently under construction. A total of 120 rooms and suites, designed by Thierry Despont, and 85 residences from 1508 London are due to open in the former Old War Office at the end of 2022. The ensemble will be complemented by 11 restaurants and bars under the direction of first-class chefs and restaurateurs. A comprehensive wellness concept with spa and fitness facilities as well as an indoor pool completes Raffles London at the OWO.
Living behind listed buildings
It is a truly impressive building that will be home to the new luxury hotel project. The iconic Old War Office building, known as the OWO for short, is located in Whitehall. While the listed façade of the building, which was completed in 1906 and designed by British architect William Young, has been preserved, recent years have been devoted to restoring the original Edwardian architecture. The interior has been completely redesigned. Here too, the family-run Hinduja Group, which acquired the building, worked to carefully restore and preserve the historic features. For example, they commissioned a refurbishment of the intricate hand-laid mosaic floors. Oak paneling, chandeliers, the magnificent marble staircase and parts of the interior were also given an update.
The well-known designer Despont is responsible for the transformation. He has already been involved in renowned large-scale projects, such as the transformation of well-known landmarks like the Getty Center and the Statue of Liberty. The rooms are being redesigned around their history and heritage. Without ignoring modernity, of course. The former offices of military and politically influential people have been transformed into the most sought-after suites at Raffles London at the OWO. Suites are also being created in the corner towers of the building, from where guests can enjoy a direct view of the Horse Guards and St. James's Park.
The Old War Office, which once inspired Ian Fleming to write his famous James Bond series, is set to become a place of peace and tranquillity in its second life. This is ensured not least by Raffles' excellent spa and wellness concept. Thanks to its extensive culinary offering, "The OWO" is already seen as the heart of London's culinary scene. Which would have to be proven. What is certain is that the Frenchman Philippe Leboeuf, who has been entrusted with the opening of the hotel as Managing Director, will do everything in his power to use his wealth of experience for the benefit of the brand.
