Poseidon Expeditions makes North Pole trips possible this year
Russia opens borders for German citizens
Hamburg, May 2021:
Anyone who wants to discover the northernmost latitudes with the world's most powerful icebreaker now has the opportunity to do so again: The shipping company Poseidon Expeditions, which specializes in expeditions to polar regions, is sailing to the North Pole this year with the "50 Years of Victory" - and can finally take German guests on board again. "Russia has opened its borders to German citizens," says Elena Termer, Managing Director of Poseidon Expeditions. "We are delighted to be able to make our coveted North Pole expedition available to German explorers again in July 2021."
Adventures on board the world's most powerful icebreaker
Passengers can even look forward to a unique event: the crew of the "50 Years of Victory" will pick up the Russian adventurer, artist, Orthodox cleric and explorer Fyodor Konyukhov after a whole ten days alone in the Arctic Ocean and bring him back home. Konyukhov had previously had Poseidon Expeditions take him to the geographic North Pole and set up a polar station on a stable ice floe. His research program, developed in collaboration with the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in Moscow, focuses on climate change and the pollution of the world's oceans. Konyukhov expects to drift around eight kilometers further on the ice floe every day, moving up to almost 100 kilometers away from the North Pole.
Talk to experts and learn about nature
Guests on the second expedition will certainly have numerous opportunities to get to know Konyukhov, talk to him and view his works of art. In addition, passengers can experience the breathtaking nature of the far north as part of expeditions with Zodiac inflatable boats suitable for expeditions and the ship's own helicopter. With a bit of luck, walruses, rare birds and - from a safe distance - even polar bears can be observed.
Capacity still available for this year's trip
The North Pole expedition with a German escort will take place from July 21 to August 2, 2021. There are currently still a few places available on the "50 Years of Victory" for travelers from Germany. Next year, the polar experts from Poseidon Expeditions are once again planning three North Pole voyages, which can already be booked now.
