Lago Bianco

Ice skating at 2234 meters above sea level

Black ice forms on Lago Bianco on the Bernina Pass at the start of winter in ideal conditions, which has already attracted many visitors and onlookers. Over the upcoming Christmas and New Year holidays, the frozen mountain lake will be officially opened to ice skaters for the first time. A new high alpine experience that is also easily accessible for non-skiers. Under the name "Lago Bianco Valposchiavo - 2234 Ice Paradise", part of Lago Bianco will be open to all ice-skating enthusiasts every day from December 20, 2018 to January 13, 2019 from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. Over the past two years, glaciologists have analyzed the ice structure on Lago Bianco in detail and found it to be very suitable for ice skating. When snow falls, the relevant areas are regularly cleaned. Those responsible for tourism in the region are proud of this new offer for guests. "Doing pirouettes or playing ice hockey at 2234 meters above sea level, on a pitch-black surface surrounded by peaks covered in white sugar: we can offer our holiday guests a wonderful new highlight," says Kaspar Howald, Director of Valposchiavo Turismo and Co-Managing Director of Bernina Glaciers.

Another attractive feature is the easy accessibility
of Lago Bianco via the UNESCO World Heritage route of the Rhaetian Railway to the "Ospizio Bernina" station. Hourly connections take guests from Pontresina, St. Moritz or Poschiavo to the high alpine ice field and back again. Access is exclusively via the level crossing at Ospizio Bernina station. Direct access by car is not possible. There are hourly train connections from the parking lots in Bernina Diavolezza, Morteratsch and Lagalb. Ice skates can be hired on site and a bar and restaurant are available for refreshments. Admission to the ice rink on Lago Bianco costs CHF 5 for adults and CHF 3 for children (aged 6 to 16).
