Between a Sea of Clouds and a Night Market
Taiwan combines majestic high mountains, pristine coral coasts, and a vibrant metropolis within a remarkably compact arena. Even a brief stopover in Taipei offers an initial glimpse of the island’s multifaceted allure.
For many Austrian travelers, Taiwan remains uncharted terrain—yet within this compact island, alpine peaks exceeding 3,000 meters rub shoulders with the coral shores of Kenting in the tropics and the serene waters of Sun Moon Lake at the heart of the island. Because the Tropic of Cancer bisects Taiwan, it is not uncommon for snow to dust the mountains in winter while, just a few degrees south, travelers are snorkeling amid vibrant reefs.
Taipei offers the perfect contrast. Historic temples stand alongside neon-lit streets, and upscale restaurants sit next to lively night markets serving stinky tofu, beef noodle soup, and dumplings. Towering over the city is Taipei 101, modeled after a bamboo stalk; just about 30 minutes away lie the hot springs of Yangmingshan National Park. The journey continues by rail: the THSR high-speed train links Taipei with Kaohsiung in the south in approximately 90 minutes. For those with limited time, Taiwan also excels as a stopover. Transit passengers with a layover of 7 to 24 hours can join complimentary, roughly four-hour half-day excursions to temples, historic towns, and night markets around Taipei and Taoyuan. A valid entry permit is required, and places are limited, so reservations must be made online.
