Architecture Meets Alps
Hotel Maistra 160 opens in the heart of Pontresina
On the main street of the Upper Engadine vacation resort of Pontresina, the well-known hotelier and entrepreneur couple Bettina and Richard Plattner have fulfilled a dream: the four-star superior Hotel Maistra 160, which will open in November 23.
Because the architecture was to play a central role, the Plattners engaged the renowned Graubünden architect Gion A. Caminada. He knows like no other how to build contemporary buildings in remote mountain regions without detracting from established sites and landscapes, thereby opening up new perspectives.
The Maistra 160 comprises 36 double rooms and eleven lodges with one, two or three bedrooms. In the spacious restaurant with terrace and in the Arvensaal, "alpine oriental crossover" cuisine combined with current food trends is served. The hotel bar, the regulars' table and an event room, which revives Pontresina's legendary "Pöstlikeller", are inviting meeting places. Guests also have access to a curated library with more than 900 books, the Creative Box studio and the Maistra Concept Store with "Bubbles & Cake", which sells high-quality local handicrafts, among other things.
The spa infrastructure of Maistra 160 is arranged on two floors around a cloister open to the sky, creating a fascinating world of natural elements. An atrium with an open fire, an open-air warm water pool, a bio sauna and a Finnish sauna, a large basalt steam bath and a relaxation room with a sun deck allow for retreat and relaxation. A fitness, yoga and gymnastics room complete the comprehensive offer for a regenerating time-out.
Regional materials, regional craftsmanship - the stone and wood used in the construction come from the Engadin, Graubünden and Ticino and were processed by local and regional specialists and craftsmen. The project team also included two freelance artists.
