125 Years of Vitznauerhof – Timeless Elegance on Lake Lucerne

For 125 years, the Vitznauerhof has been welcoming guests right on the shores of Lake Lucerne. As the elegant grande dame of the Belle Époque, this boutique hotel will celebrate its anniversary in 2026 with a diverse program of events—ranging from its own crime novel to culinary events and special anniversary offers.

Anyone who has ever stayed at the Vitznauerhof knows: “Life is better at the lake.” Generations of guests have already experienced this. Prominent visitors over the past 125 years have included Princess Gina of Liechtenstein, composer Richard Strauss, writer Hermann Hesse, painter Paul Klee, and General Henri Guisan. Then as now, travelers come here seeking nature, relaxation, and the special Riviera flair of Lake Lucerne—with impressive views of the surrounding mountains.

The “Red Diva by the Lake” was built on the site of a former shipyard where paddle steamers were once constructed and launched. The Michel family of hoteliers expanded the grounds to include a garden directly on the lake and a hotel park forest—a feature once typical of grand hotels, which in most cases no longer exists today and has been built over. As a result, the Vitznauerhof boasts one of the last remaining hotel park forests.

“125 years of the Vitznauerhof is not just an anniversary for us, but also a moment of gratitude. Many of our guests have been with us for years or even generations. We are particularly delighted that so many regular guests also want to celebrate this anniversary year with us,” says host Raphael Herzog.

An Icon Through the Ages

Despite continuous renovations, the Vitznauerhof still exudes the Art Nouveau charm that Mannheim’s city building inspector Carl Kühn (1873–1942) shaped as its architect. Even at the time of its opening, the connection to the Swiss telephone network and low-pressure steam heating were considered chic and “first class.” Extensive renovations were also carried out last winter—with a nod to history: Today, the rooms feature retro telephones in the style of the past, yet connected via modern VoIP technology.

Today, a spa right on Lake Lucerne and several dining concepts round out the hotel’s offerings. At the Inspiration restaurant, guests enjoy creative cuisine with views of the lake and mountains—both on the spacious panoramic terrace with its Riviera flair and in the stylish interior. In the summer, the Sens restaurant becomes the summer residence of top international chefs. Starting in the fall, the fondue boat also docks at the Vitznauerhof again.

The Vitznauerhof has long been regarded as a trendsetter in the Central Swiss hotel industry. With new holistic events, an expanded spa offering, and a “Quiet Luxury” vibe, the hotel captures the spirit of the times—without losing its Mediterranean lifestyle.

Guests can now also personalize their rooms with a custom fragrance concept. A diffuser with various scent compositions—such as “Morning,” “Relax,” or “Balance”—creates different moods upon request. The concept was developed in collaboration with the founders of Casa Cafaro. This makes the Vitznauerhof the first hotel to offer a curated scent concept directly in the guest room.
