The spicy cuisine of Gran Canaria
The Canary Island's gastronomy has the sea and more to offer.
It took 500 years for Gran Canaria's gastronomy to develop its full flavor. Seafarers and travelers from all over the world brought the flavours of their homeland with them. This is the origin of Gran Canaria's cuisine, the tradition of the great port in the middle of the Atlantic.
The mixture of exotic and local ingredients and recipes explains the delicious diversity of the gastronomy of this island and its 21 municipalities. From exquisite blossom cheese to batata confectionery, wine, sugar cane rum and coffee, visitors to Gran Canaria can discover new treasures of local cuisine every day.
And then there is the sea:
The Atlantic, which washes the island where the fertile fruit and vegetable gardens were planted.
Gran Canaria was lucky, because the island's larders are well stocked. Exquisite fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes, apples, olives, tropical fruits and oranges, almonds and sweet bananas ripen in the mild climate. The fresh catch from the sea is offered at the market stalls.
Teror, in the heart of the island, delights with various culinary specialties. The most famous are the chorizos blandos (soft paprika sausages) and the morcillas dulces (sweet blood sausages), which are handmade in local family businesses. To the delight of connoisseurs and gourmets, the reddish chorizo is spread on crispy wood-fired bread rolls at the stalls. The Sunday market also offers many bread specialties, some of which are baked especially for the market in Teror.
Of course, the Teror market is also a paradise for cheese lovers. On offer are fresh and matured cheeses, with paprika or gofio rind, made from goat's or sheep's milk or from mixtures with cow's milk, produced by shepherds and farmers from all regions of the island, and the sight of the variety of cheeses is a delight for the eyes, surpassed only by that of the palate.
Incidentally, the restaurant menus also include many meat dishes - another culinary specialty of the village.
These are just a few examples of the delights that await culinary explorers on the island. Enjoy a vacation full of pleasure and sunshine on Gran Canaria!
