Photo behavior of the Swiss on vacation
Almost two thirds of Swiss avoid tourist hotspots
A new study by Huawei, one of the leading global technology companies, reveals that 61% of Swiss people avoid some of the most beautiful places abroad when on vacation. The study of over 1,000 participants, conducted by Huawei to mark the launch of the Huawei P20 Pro with the world's first triple camera in a smartphone, found that overcrowding (27%), lack of proximity (20%) and long queues (16%) are the main reasons why the Swiss don't snap Instagram-worthy pictures of Europe's most popular sights.
As Swiss tourists spend a total of 3 million hours queuing
to see and photograph sights, more than a third (38%) become increasingly frustrated when trying to snap the perfect vacation photo. The younger generation in Switzerland is the most anxious age group when it comes to taking the perfect photo. 50% of 25-34 year olds are stressed and almost one in ten (8%) take an average of up to 600 photos on vacation to get the ultimate shot. Due to the ever-growing popularity of European city breaks, famous tourist spots are heavily overcrowded. 85% of Swiss tourists are of the opinion that popular sights are now too crowded. This problem point is repeated in all countries surveyed, and 83% of respondents across Europe believe that many of the most popular attractions are now attracting too many people. The situation only seems to be getting worse, with visitor numbers increasing year on year. France, the most visited country in the world, attracted 82 million tourists in 2016, Spain received 76 million and Italy 53 million.
The most frustrating tourist hotspots in Europe
The study also revealed the ten most frustrating tourist hotspots for photos in ten countries, including the UK, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. Across Europe, respondents voted the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland as the most difficult landmark to photograph (18%), followed by the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps (12%) and Gaudí's masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, in third place (8%). When it comes to photographing local landmarks, a closer look within the country's borders reveals that more than 1 in 5 people in Switzerland are most desperate to photograph the Matterhorn (22%) - followed by the Rhine Falls (16%) and Lake Geneva (13%).
