"My Florence": Interview with Salvatore Ferragamo

Interview with the grandson of the legendary shoe designer

The native Florentine, grandson of the legendary shoe designer, is Vice-President of the Lungarno Collection , which also includes the LHW Hotel "Portrait Firenze". The hotel group, founded in 1995, is part of the Ferragamo fashion and lifestyle dynasty.

When and how did Ferragamo establish itself in Florence?

My grandfather returned to Florence from America in 1927. In 1938, he opened his first store in the prestigious Via de' Tornabuoni - today the city's most exclusive shopping district. There he welcomed Hollywood stars, aristocrats and diplomats, laying the foundations for the worldwide fame of Tuscan hospitality and the warm tradition of our family.

How do you see the Hotel Portrait within the luxury hotel industry in Florence?

We are an exclusive niche luxury hotel group, but our history allows us to offer exceptional service in iconic locations. Our spaces combine elegance with functionality, while hospitality is deeply rooted in our DNA - inspired by our rich cultural heritage. You could say we have transformed my grandfather's bespoke perfection into a luxury hotel experience - or rather, a holistic lifestyle experience. With the Lungarno Collection, we have created a brand that remains true to these values. Style, innovation and the highest quality are essential components of our concept. In our hotels, you can feel the love of genuine craftsmanship, an atmosphere of intimacy and a service that leaves nothing to be desired.

What does Florence mean to you personally?

For my family, Florence is the place where we were able to break new ground and grow. For me personally, this city is past, present and future at the same time - and will always remain the focus of my professional and personal projects.

Do you have any special restaurant recommendations?

Some of my personal favorites are Borgo San Jacopo, our Michelin-starred restaurant with spectacular views of the Ponte Vecchio, and the charming Caffè dell'Oro on the opposite side of the river. For the best Florentine steak, I recommend the Buca Lapi, while the Latini offers classic Tuscan cuisine at the highest level. Lovers of Mediterranean fish dishes will be delighted at Fuor D'Acqua. For a casual meal, I like to visit the Caffè Odeon in the new Giunti bookshop on Piazza Strozzi or the bistro Il Borro Tuscan, located directly in front of the Ponte Santa Trinita with a breathtaking view of the sunset. Not to forget: our La Terrazza Rooftop Bar in the Hotel Continentale - the perfect place for an aperitif with one of the most beautiful panoramic views over Florence.

What experiences should guests not miss in Florence?

Florence enchants with its beauty, its history and its inexhaustible art. But if you take your time, you will also discover hidden treasures: private gardens, artisan studios or exclusive designer studios. A special highlight is our private Ferragamo Museum. A stroll through the authentic Oltrarno district is just as worthwhile as a bike ride in the green surroundings. A hike to Forte Belvedere to enjoy the unique view of the city or a visit to the Giardino di Boboli with its blossoming citrus trees and fragrant roses are also unforgettable. Our lifestyle team at the Hotel Portrait Firenze will be delighted to put together tailor-made experiences that allow you to experience Florence in all its splendor.
