Grape harvest 2020
"The 2020 vintage is now in the cellar, we are very pleased with the very high quality of the grapes, but unfortunately the quantity in the cellar was also below average this year," says oenologist Stephan Filippi. After the warm temperatures in spring caused the grapes to bloom two weeks earlier and get off to a real lightning start, cooler temperatures and high rainfall in June slowed down the grapes' development. In July and August, the weather stabilized and there were fortunately no extreme heat events or hailstorms - as was unfortunately the case in the previous year. Autumn was a little more unstable, but we were still able to start the harvest a little earlier than usual and finished the harvest in mid-October to our satisfaction.
"We are expecting an excellent 2020 vintage, especially for Lagrein," confirms Stephan Filippi proudly as he delivers the last Lagrein grapes. "The grapes are very healthy and fully ripe, with a balanced acid-sugar ratio in terms of taste."
Overall, the 2020 vintage is slightly lower than the multi-year average. Filippi speaks of a drop in volume of 5% in the lower vineyards around Bolzano and up to 20% in the higher vineyards on the Ritten and in Jenesien. In addition to the Lagrein, this year the Burgundy varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay in particular promise to produce incredibly long-lived and evolving wines.
Awards fall 2020
1st place | Cooperative Cup 2020
At the VINUM International Cooperative Cup with participants from Germany, South Tyrol and Austria, the Bolzano winery won first place. Five other South Tyrolean cooperatives also demonstrated their quality skills and placed in the top ten.
Stephan Filippi is one of the best oenologists in Italy and proves this year after year. His focus is not only on the technical know-how in the cellar; according to Filippi, quality is already created in the vineyard. He and his agronomically trained employees support the 224 members throughout the year, whether on topics such as low-soreness pruning, various yield reduction measures, integrated pest management or the perfect harvest time.
When building the winery, which was completed in 2018, the main focus was on gentle processing of the grapes, which are transported using only gravity and without pumps. This certainly contributes to a further improvement of the winery's already award-winning wines.
