Enjoy a trip to Florida's Sunshine Coast!
A culinary foray through St. Pete/Clearwater
The St. Pete/Clearwater region is probably the most surprising travel destination in Florida - and offers much more than "just" lots of sun and miles of dream beaches! The region is urban, natural, creative and also has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine!
In St. Pete/Clearwater, travelers will find a wide selection of different cuisines and tastes. It's not just burgers and fries that taste good here, it's the international range that gives the region's culinary map that little bit extra. And the really special thing about it: Clearwater scores particularly well with its many individual restaurants with colorful local color, rather than faceless chains. Incidentally, this is exactly what the locals are proud of - and rightly so!
But what exactly makes it so diverse? You could say it's the colorful mix on offer here. Fresh seafood, Spanish, Italian or vegan, an innovative craft beer scene and the desire to keep expanding the culinary portfolio - with the occasional creative garnish. New restaurants with exciting concepts are constantly opening, such as a bookshop with a wine bar.
Fresh fish!
The location directly on the Gulf of Mexico makes it obvious: fresh seafood is hard to miss here. Freshly caught fish is available at Walt'z Fish Shak on Madeira Beach, for example. The food at this restaurant comes with the guarantee that the fish has not been frozen beforehand. Depending on the fishing season, the menu also varies and is therefore always a little surprising. Another highlight of the region: the various grouper dishes. In Clearwater Beach, a visit to Frenchy's Rockaway Grill - known throughout the region for its delicious grouper sandwiches - is a culinary must. And if you have a weakness for smoked fish, you should pay a visit to Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish! Because someone who has been successful in the business for 67 years knows his trade!
Italian, Spanish y mucho más!
But even for those who don't have seafood at the top of their list of priorities, there is plenty to discover in St. Pete/Clearwater. Guests at the Columbia Restaurant in Sand Key, for example, can look forward to traditional Spanish dishes prepared according to centuries-old original recipes. Fresh Italian fusion cuisine with products from the region is served at FarmTable Cucina in downtown St. Pete. If you want something healthy, head to the Cider Press Café on Central Avenue in St. Pete (also a hot tip for vegans).
Welcome to the Gulp Coast?
Craft beer is one of the absolute trend drinks of our time - even in this country. However, these creative beer creations did not originate in Europe, but in the USA. And one of the most ambitious craft beer scenes can be found in St. Pete/Clearwater: beer lovers get their money's worth in over 35 microbreweries, so that the region lives up to its nickname "Gulp Coast". The selection ranges from classic pilsner, lager, porter, stout and cider to mead as well as IPA ("Indian Pale Ale") and APA ("American Pale Ale"). You should definitely try the Florida Weisse, for which the popular sunshine destination is famous.
Out of the box
Craft cocktail bar, bookstore with wine bar, bourbon tasting: what more could you want? St. Pete/Clearwater is not exactly stingy with creative stores, stores and bars and offers visitors a wide range of innovative places to eat and drink. Just recently, for example, the Sonder Social Club in Dunedin opened its doors as the city's first craft cocktail bar among the thriving brewery scene. A winter highlight is the Book+Bottle - a location that combines a bookshop with a wine bar and creates a cozy atmosphere to enjoy.
