Beethoven year 2020

Beethoven belongs to everyone

This year marks the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth. An event that is being celebrated in Vienna. The world-famous composer has left numerous traces in the city.

If you love classical music,
probably already have all the concert tickets for the most important events in Beethoven's jubilee year in their pockets. Those who are not so familiar with the composer's music will have plenty of opportunities to discover his works in 2020. Everyone has probably heard one piece by Ludwig van Beethoven: the European anthem. "Ode to Joy", the crowning finale of the master's 9th Symphony, resounds through all countries and carries an important message:

All men become brothers.

Beethoven lived in Vienna for 35 years and his entire oeuvre is set here. The musical epoch that he, Mozart and Haydn shaped is known as Viennese Classicism. Vienna's reputation as the world capital of music is based on this.

Anyone looking for traces of Beethoven
in the metropolis on the Danube will quickly find what they are looking for. At the Theater an der Wien, for example, where he also lived for some time and where his only opera - "Fidelio" - was premiered. The work is also on the program in the jubilee year, in a production by Christoph Waltz. Beethoven moved very frequently, and many a plaque commemorates a residence of the restless spirit. Today's Beethoven Museum is housed in one of his residences in the 19th district.

The composer,
who is said to have had a quick temper, was often supported by patrons in his precarious living situations. This enabled him to live in the Pasqualati house and compose "Für Elise". Today there is a municipal building in Silbergasse, which used to be Beethoven's home. Speaking of municipal buildings. As part of the commemorative year, sounds by the artist will also be heard there. Several events are planned here.
