The fascination of wine cellars

Markus Stritt, sales manager for interior design and hotels at BAUR WohnFaszination, is a specialist for all questions relating to individual custom-made products of all kinds and gives an insight into the fascinating world of wine cellars in this interview. The fine wines - some of which are of immense value - require a suitable setting and adequate presentation. The wine cellar should be a space that invites you to linger. The design and furnishings of BAUR WohnFaszination therefore guarantee that the wine storage is optimized in terms of aesthetics and design and ensures an atmospheric presentation at the wine tasting. But what can this appearance look like? Which parameters are decisive for a good ambience and to what extent should a wine cellar also be a living space? Markus Stritt is a professional when it comes to wine cellar design and answers these questions and more for our wine connoisseurs.

In your opinion, which design style is currently setting the trend?

We are seeing a very clear trend towards our own personal style. Our customers don't want to follow a fashionable style, they want to express their own. The unprecedented variety of materials supports this trend in particular. The days of damp, dark wine cellars are over. People want a "living" wine cellar with charm.

Which materials are part of contemporary design?

Genuine oak wood has always been the classic, which is still very popular. But by no means stained dark and decorated with elaborate carvings, but rather in its light, natural tone and, above all, without frills.
The combination with stone and glass leaves plenty of scope for individual design freedom. Modern lighting concepts make the wine cellar appear friendly and set atmospheric accents.

Does a wine cellar, as the name suggests, always have to be designed in a cellar room?

In the past, this made perfect sense due to the many advantages that a cellar room offered. However, today's air conditioning technology also allows installation in other rooms of the house. Today, the "wine cellar" can be installed right next to the kitchen or the living room - just as you like and wherever the space is available.

You mentioned a "living" wine cellar. Can you define this more precisely?

Many of our customers are collectors who invest a lot of money in fine wines or whiskey or similar. This adds up to impressive sums. Which collector wants to enjoy these treasures in a dark, damp cellar or present them to friends? It is desirable to give these small "treasures" the right setting. A genuine "Massandra 1775" often gets its own storage niche and is perfectly staged with a spotlight. People want to share their joy today and the ambience simply has to be right and inviting.

How much space should you plan for a wine cellar?

Well, that depends entirely on how large your collection of fine tropical wines is and will be and whether a room is only to be used for storage or also for tasting. In principle, however, even smaller rooms can be used for this purpose.
