Quarter love tours: Munich surprises - if you let it

Munich invites you to rediscover it - off the beaten track, with stories that touch and places that surprise. Since spring 2021, passionate guides have been leading tours for two hours each through a total of nine districts of the city - you can choose from Schwabing, the Kunstareal in Maxvorstadt, Haidhausen, Neuhausen-Nymphenburg, Giesing, the Schlachthof and Bahnhofsviertel districts as well as the Olympic Park and the Olympic Village. Every Saturday at 3 p.m. and Thursday at 6 p.m. you can go on a journey of discovery - and each tour opens up a new chapter. The Glockenbachviertel and Giesing in particular show how different the Munich lifestyle can sound.

The Glockenbachviertel itself has long been regarded as the epitome of Munich's urban diversity. Often mentioned in the same breath as the Gärtnerplatz district, it inspires with its unmistakable mix of lively nightlife, creative scene and queer culture, whose roots go back to the 1960s. In addition to St. Maximilian's Church with its unconventional priest Rainer Maria Schießler, another highlight is a visit to the legendary Deutsche Eiche, a fixture of the gay and lesbian scene. The tour tells the story of cultural awakening, social movement and the people who shaped the district - from alternative artists to international guests such as Freddie Mercury.

Giesing is completely different - down-to-earth, genuine and with unmistakable local pride. Here, it's not glamour that dominates, but a lively neighborhood. Between the Grünwalder stadium, the old "Boazn" and the quiet paths along the Auer Mühlbach, you can feel why Munich is also known as the "village of millions". Soccer culture, pub life and long-standing ties form a district that has retained its soul despite change. The tour shows Giesing as a place where Munich's heart beats - loud, warm and authentic.

Other tours also illustrate the city's many facets: in the Schlachthofviertel, a new cultural center is emerging between industrial buildings, street art and projects such as Bahnwärter Thiel, which combines music, theater and urban open spaces. Schwabing tells of Art Nouveau, bohemia and intellectual glamour, while Neuhausen-Nymphenburg shows a quieter side with neighborhood life, church architecture and palace views.

The Kunstareal in Maxvorstadt leads right into the heart of Munich's cultural heritage, where museums and universities meet, and the Olympiapark is a symbol of the lightness and vision of the future of the 1972 Olympic Games.

The neighborhoods are as diverse as the perspectives: from the scene and subculture to history and architecture to music, theater and beer culture. The guided tours paint a lively portrait of a city that is constantly changing - and shows its own face in every neighborhood.
