Six Senses completely without plastic
First cooperation of a hotel brand with the United States Coalition on Sustainability and SustainChainTM
By 2022, both the Six Senses hotels and the spas are to be completely plastic-free. This ambitious goal is to be achieved with the help of the United States Coalition on Sustainability and the international SustainChainTM platform.
Innovations required
The Six Senses Resorts are gradually doing away with more and more plastic products. It all started with single-use plastics, i.e. disposable plastic products. In the future, plastic is to become completely passé. Six Senses has been working on reducing single-use products for many years. As early as the 1990s, cosmetic products in the bathroom were offered in refillable ceramic dispensers. Since 2003, guests no longer receive their water in plastic bottles, but in refillable glass bottles, which saved over 2.4 million plastic bottles in 2019/2020. Straws have also not been available at any of the resorts for some time now.
A number of innovations are needed to completely eliminate plastic - which is also used in areas where it is not immediately visible or suspected, such as in fabrics, furniture or in the kitchen. The SustainChain platform enables an exchange with relevant suppliers. Together, strategies are developed to bring about long-term change.
At Six Senses, Jeffrey Smith, Vice President Sustainability, and Six Senses Yao Noi are currently working on a prototype for a plastic-free kitchen. This was so successful that it is now to be implemented at the group's other resorts. "The cooperation with SustainChainTM opens up new ways of innovation and collaboration with value chains. This will not only enable us to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals, but also our major goal of "Plastic Free in 2022". We are already seeing great progress and the opportunity to continue to grow together," says Smith.
