Ethiopian Airlines: Africa's leading airline on course for global success
Why the airline is one of the most successful airlines in Africa
With over 160 destinations worldwide, a modern fleet and a focus on sustainability, Ethiopian Airlines is one of Africa's most successful airlines. As a member of Star Alliance, it has been named Best Airline in Africa (Skytrax) for eight consecutive years and received another 4-Star Global Airline award from APEX in 2025. CEO Mesfin Tasew emphasizes: "This recognition reflects the commitment of our team and the trust of our passengers and motivates us to continue to set standards in customer experience, innovation and excellence."
With the Vision 2035 strategy, Ethiopian aims to become one of the top 20 global aviation groups. A multi-hub strategy with partners such as ASKY, Malawi Airlines, Zambia Airways and Air Congo strengthens the pan-African network. Ethiopian Airlines is also planning to build a state-of-the-art mega airport in Bishoftu, around 40 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. The new hub is being designed as a pioneering aerotropolis - an urban airport model that intelligently links aviation, business and infrastructure. In the first stage of expansion, the airport will be able to handle 60 million passengers a year, with an option to expand to up to 110 million. This will not only create the largest airport in Africa, but also one of the most important global aviation hubs. The major project aims to sustainably strengthen trade, tourism and logistics in the region, create new jobs and at the same time relieve the capacity of the existing Bole International Airport.
