Schadau Castle Thun

When the days get shorter, a special atmosphere is created on Lake Thun.

The lake with its Alpine panorama and Schadau Park with its hundred-year-old trees change the mood almost every hour. Misty and mysterious in the morning, clear with snow-covered mountains during the day and festively illuminated in the evening.

The "Historic Hotel of the Year 2021", awarded by ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites, was built in 1847 in Schadaupark as a private summer residence. The public park was laid out as an English garden with its own nursery and is located directly on Lake Thun, at the outflow of the River Aare.

With the colder season the cultural and culinary program at Schadau Castle also begins. Together with director Florian Rexer, horror and crime scene dinners are staged, the famous "Wedding Dress Party" takes place in January and in February every bottle is "sabred" by the guests at the traditional champagne dinner.

After nature and culture, the 9 unique rooms, some with magnificent lake views, invite you to relax. All with original floors from the time of construction and some with custom-made, modern furniture. The construction of the current castle building was commissioned by the Neuchâtel banker Denis Alfred de Rougemont between 1847 and 1852 as a summer retreat. The Neuchâtel architect James Victor Colin and the architect Pierre-Charles Dusillion, who trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, created a building that bears witness to the highest level of craftsmanship, from the rich sandstone ornamentation to the exquisite interior design.
As one of the most important works of romantic historicism in Switzerland, Schadau Castle is a cultural asset of national importance. In the entrance hall of the castle, the sandstone staircase designed by sculptor Joseph Hubert Verbunt leads to the upper floors and throughout the building there are outstanding imitations of wood, marble and stucco. After various mixed uses and a planned demolition in the middle of the 20th century, the castle was converted into a 3-star boutique hotel by the city of Thun between 2017 and 2019 in collaboration with the conservation authorities.

Schadau Castle is also a member of "Swiss Historic Hotels" and the Association of Lake Thun Castles. In the castles of Oberhofen, Thun, Spiez and Hünegg, travelers interested in culture will find museums with their very own stories. What they all have in common is their architecture, which was pioneering in its era, and their spectacular location.
