Lobbies with tartan-patterned carpeting, men in brightly colored pants and bars called either "Hole in one" or "To the 19th hole": I confess, the keyword "golf hotel" starts a movie in my head. And it's not a pretty movie - even (or perhaps because) I myself have swung clubs for years and spent many nights in classic golf hotels ... The Onyria Palmares Beach House Hotel in Odiáxere proves that there is another way.

From the outside rather an inconspicuous two-storey functional building, its interior inspires with casual-lifestylish luxury, Scandinavian-Mediterranean-inspired design and casual "laid back" flair. Reception, bar, lounge and restaurant with a large panoramic terrace merge almost seamlessly into one another and exude loft-like charm. The 18 rooms are similarly open - and extremely spacious - with bathrooms integrated into the living area, first-class beds and fine photographic art on the walls. As the builders were of the opinion that there is no need for an additional wellness area with such a high feel-good factor, you can order a masseur directly to your room or take a private yoga class with an instructor directly on the nearby dream beach.
It's a shame that the culinary offering is much less enjoyable: While breakfast is rather disappointing in terms of choice and quality, the lunch and dinner menu is limited to a few standard dishes and a few solidly prepared local specialties. This does not correspond to the usual 5* level! On the other hand, the surrounding 27-hole golf course belonging to the resort is one of the most beautiful in Portugal. Naturally integrated into the gentle hilly landscape and with greens that almost reach the dunes and the sea, even passionate ex-golfers like me think about booking a few pro lessons again! Or even to play a round at home. It's only a few meters from your own terrace to the next tee ...
