Mandarin Oriental Bangkok
The legend lives on
has been added. This increases the variety of restaurants and bars to eleven first-class offerings.
Welcome to the Oriental means stepping out of the tropical sultriness, the noisy, bustling concrete jungle of Bangkok and into another world: we are greeted with our name, a wreath of jasmine flowers and check-in formalities are completed in our room. The iconic hotel enchants with an endless list of attentive details: bathrobes made of shimmering Thai silk, yoga mats in the wardrobe, the finest macarons in the afternoon, pre-dinner snacks in the evening, fresh ice cubes for drinks at all times. The suites in the Author's Wing, the oldest part of the building, are spectacular.
From our suite in the Garden Wing, which was extensively renovated in 2016, there is an incomparable view of the Chao Phraya River, which instantly makes you forget that our retreat is not all that big. As we leave the rooms, we are delighted to discover that the little white sticks still exist, leaning against the bottom of the door and signaling to the butler that the guest has left their room. Serving spirits immediately arrange, fold and tidy everything up again, add fruit and refill the fridge. The highly praised service is still unbeatable. It continues in the morning at the excellent breakfast buffet on the legendary Riverside Terrace, where plates are carried to the table and parasols are rearranged without anyone noticing. You can indulge in the opulent wellness offerings at the award-winning spa and fitness center on the other side of the river, book a yoga or tai chi class or a Thai cooking course. But you can also just lie by the pool for hours, read Somerset Maugham and look out over the river - it's a good thing that some things just never change.
