The unexpected often happens: I remember this saying as I get out of the cab in front of the Anantara Siam and am amazed to realize that I have stayed here before! Back when the hotel was still a Four Seasons and was one of the best hotels in the city. A lot has changed since then.
Or not - at least not in terms of the interior: This has become rather outdated, albeit extremely well maintained. You can like that. But you can also just find it old-fashioned. Anything but a matter of taste, but simply cruelty to animals: in every room and at reception, lonely goldfish live an extremely dreary and anything but species-appropriate life in flower vases that are far too small. That alone should have been reason enough to leave. The next annoyance immediately after check-in: a cell phone in the room can be used to make free calls to the rest of the world. A nice service, but it doesn't cover all countries. Austria? Not available. But, according to the annoyed reply from the concierge desk, you could call Australia instead, as that would sound similar to Austria ...
Hardly less impertinent: At breakfast, I was allocated a table on the terrace, although I would have preferred to sit in the air-conditioned interior. However, one of the many uncleared tables there would have had to be re-set first - which the service staff found unreasonable. As a small compensation, however, the breakfast menu was extremely varied and delicious. No less convincing: the Bella Cucina in the Italian restaurant Biscotti. But who goes to Bangkok to eat Italian food?
My conclusion: The hotel as such still has its charm. And depending on the room you book, the view of the racecourse and golf course in the middle of the city is also very appealing. Otherwise, however, Anantara Siam has an attitude that is unacceptable and does not meet the usual Anantara standards.
